The primary purpose of The Selection Committee is to actively recruit, objectively screen and publicly endorse the best possible School Board candidates, in order to promote a diverse and highly qualified group of School Board Members who are committed to excellence in our schools.
The Selection Committee was created to end geographical domination of the
School Board. To avoid conflicts of interest, potential School Board candidates
who hold political office are not eligible for consideration. In addition,
to prevent repeated 'rubber-stamping' of incumbents, Board Members are typically
endorsed for a maximum of 2 three-year terms.
Over the years, The Selection Committee has sought to protect the district
from single-issue candidates, to keep political parties out of the election
process and to balance the valuable experience gained by sitting Board Members
with the need for fresh insights and energies provided by new members.
Usually, Selection Committee meetings are held monthly. However,
in January, besides our regular meeting, we also sponsor an Open Community
Meeting, in which everyone is invited to learn about the Selection Committee,
and how to become a member, as well as how to become a candidate for the School
Board.
